south africa. >> reporter: bundle up. it is still cold out here. i'm kiet do. we have a live report. yeah, freezing temperatures again around the bay area. freeze warnings are up. what a chilly day. this is the third day in a row of freezing temperatures showing up outside. some of those numbers dropping off under clear skies this morning into the 20s and 30s. now 23 in santa rosa. 28 in concord. 39 in san francisco. and 30 degrees in livermore. so a very cold start to the day again freeze warnings until 9:00. then clouds roll in in the middle of the day. plan on highs only in the 40s and 50s. this afternoon we could see a little rain. and then tonight, cold enough to see snow on the local mountains down to 2500 feet. a great place to go it weekend. >> reporter: after this week i think i'm just going to lay in

bed with my electric blanket, soup, hot chocolate. i think i earned that. so we're live in cambrian park in san jose. we were told to look for frosty cars and i think i found the only one in the city. here it is. the frost light than yesterday. yesterday we had to scrape it off. now it's dusting off. you get a couple of days in a row of cold subfreezing temperatures and it rings out all the moisture -- wrings out all the moisture out of the sky. so out here it's cold and dry. speaking of wringing, that sound you hear over chattering teeth is the cash register. on a normal day, this shoe repair business in walnut creek does 5 pairs of boots. now they are up to 40 a day. >> when the weather gets cold it's busy. >> reporter: have you tried to get an appointment to fix your heater lately? good luck. tricity heating just put in a new digital thermostat in this antioch insurance offers.

workers are in high heels and don't have to wear boots or gloves while typing anymore. >> i would rather be warm outside all the time. >> reporter: all right. so grab these things out of my freezer early this morning. they have been sitting on this car since about 4:00 this morning. i'll crack it open in about half hour and let you know just how cold it is out here. but as lawrence said, we have snow on the way. we are live in san jose, kiet do kpix 5. thank you, kiet. and you may have to scrape off some of that frost as you just saw off the roof of your car or windshield. we are just getting word of new problems. if you are coming up northbound 101 know san francisco near hospital curve, an accident there is reported as a hit-and- run. no delay yet on our sensors. we'll let you know if that changes. in the meantime, let's start out with another look at the north bay where northbound and southbound 101 in novato near ygnacio everything is great through san rafael and continues that way continuing towards the golden gate bridge

and sausalito. let's go flying. here's a live look at some of our sensors now coming through the altamont pass. the slowest traffic is from north flynn to vasco and then a few more brake lights to get closer to hacienda towards 680. travel times should be 23 minutes between the altamont pass and 680. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. the world celebrating the life of nelson mandela this morning. the former south african president died yesterday at the age of 95. a live look at a memorial outside his home in johannesburg. mourners had been visiting since they learned of his death. cbs reporter susan mcginnis with how the entire world is reacting. >> reporter: south africans sang and danced outside his home in johannesburg. the outpouring began in the middle of the night when word spread that the man they called madiba which means father died. >> i was sad. but i'm also happy he gets to rest in peace. >> reporter: mandela spent 27 years in prison because he fought against apartheid.

south africa's system of legalized racism. but as desmond tutu noted this morning he forgave those who imprisoned him. >> this one has become a global icon symbol of reconciliation. >> reporter: upon his release, mandela would go on to become south africa's first black president in 1994. years later, he would meet the man that would become america's first black president. >> we've lost one of the most influential courageous good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth. no longer belongs to us. he belongs to the ages. >> reporter: not far from the white house, mourners gathered at mandela's statue outside south africa's embassy. >> intellectually i think we try to prepare ourselves but emotionally it's not that easy. >> reporter: flags at the white house and other federal buildings will fly at half- staff in honor of mandela through monday. susan mcginnis, cbs news,

washington. >> there will be at least 10 days of mourning in south africa including a massive state funeral on december 15. four months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states and more than 70,000 people packed the oakland coliseum to see him back in june of 1990. kpix 5's anne makovec in the newsroom with memories of his bay area connections. it was the last stop of his united states visit that year. reporter: the east bay played a key role in the anti- apartheid movement and local leaders are remembering his visit and legacy this morning. >> it is you, you the people of oakland the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation progress to continue the struggling. >> reporter: that was mandela speaking at the packed oakland coliseum the final stop on his

1990 u.s. freedom tour. then congressman ron dellums was the first to introduce anti- apartheid legislation back in 1972 and seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of that movement. >> it was so thrilling that we americans, that we east bay residents, could have been part of something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: a lone rose left at an oakland monument memorializing mandela last night a reminder of the impact the leader will always have. >> there have been lots of people in our lifetimes who had positions and have passed on but nobody has ever matched the incredible inspiration and humanity of nelson mandela. >> reporter: that was willie brown, who puts mandela in the same group as martin luther king, jr. and john f. kennedy. but he calls mandela the "real" leader.

live in the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5. grace cathedral and the black repertory group are working on services to honor mandela. glide memorial will hold its service this sunday. we are looking back at his life on our website at kpix.com complete with a photo gallery. a task force will conduct an independent review of racial harassment of a san jose state student. four white students are accused of harassing a black roommate. a task force set up will look into existing ruse and recommend changes. retired judge ladoris cordell will lead the task force. cold weather may have been responsible for the water main break in martinez overnight last night around 10:30 at pear and pacheco boulevard. water is off but as you can see, it created a mess with a lot of water going into yards and garages nearby. new this morning, an

investigation now under way into the construction of a barge by google. a commission will determine whether google and the owners of a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it is already making changes requested by the coast guard. google reportedly plans to to open a retail store. governor brown has a strong approval rating as he heads into a possible re-election campaign. yesterday numbers show a field poll finds nearly 6 in 10 registered voters approve of his performance. 52% say they would vote for him. his closest challenger lieutenant governor able maldonado is backed by 11%. the governor hasn't said if he will seek another term. the batkid returns to san francisco. 5-year-old miles scott of siskiyou county won our hearts last month as he saved the city from evil villains. that was his dream as he battled and beat cancer.

reporter: people are scraping ice off their cars as freezing rain falls across parts of texas. a layer of slush and ice is making the roads dangerous. it's all part of a wintry blast that's hitting much of the u.s. bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow. >> i think the stuff is pretty froze up, a little icy. >> reporter: snow, ice and sleet combined to cause traffic trouble across the state of oklahoma. utility companies are scrambling to avoid power outages. >> an ice storm is absolutely our worst situation. >> reporter: the national weather service issued a winter storm warning for the louisville area for friday. >> hurry up, get all your trucks ready but then we have to wait to see when is the rain going to change over to snow and sleet. >> reporter: many stores across the mid-south are sold out of sat, generators and ice scrapers. >> supply was low in all those stores around. so i'm happy i was able to find some things to be prepared. >> reporter: these conditions are prompting the cancellation of flights, sports games and holiday festivities across the country. marlie hall for cbs news. believe it or not, we might get a little snow ourselves.

>> i know. on those peaks there, right, lawrence? >> hopefully we don't get temperatures like that. it's cold enough outside right now again back into the deep freeze in the bay area. i think we are going to see some crop damage now three successive days of these temperatures dropping off in the 20s. 21 degrees right now in fairfield. 22 in the napa valley. and 23 in santa rosa. 30s inside the bay. another very cold start to the morning. freeze warnings up until 9:00 this morning. but then we are going to start to see some changes increasing clouds toward the middle of the day. and then showers developing this afternoon. with that cold air trapped here yeah we could see a little snow over mountain peaks. temperatures slowly warming up toward this next week but for now just a slow-moving cold arctic air mass and now with this low developing on the back side that's going to move in to bring rain today and the snow later on tonight. computer models picking up on it clouds increasing toward the middle of the day and then toward the evening hours, could be wet for the commute ride on the way home. that storm system overnight into early tomorrow morning

saw yesterday in walnut creek, also parts of san mateo county. so another chilly start very frosty commute. outside we go and here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights. a fender-bender near the toll plaza so they are working to clear that, as well. the cash lanes are backing up towards the end of the parking lot. we'll go flying with simulated chopper 5 action. westbound 580 looks busy this morning out of tracy all the way towards north flynn and then again you can see those yellow sensors slow down towards dublin. so the drive time is in that slow category but it is lighter than usual. it is a friday and we often see that anyway so really past vasco that's when we see much more improvement. westbound 4 competing for the worst drive time past "a" street where the bottleneck begins. remember kcbs once you hit them, tune to kcbs radio 740-am and 106.9-fm. that is your latest "kcbs traffic."

weekend. here's your officials 9ers/seahawks forecast sunny chilly temperatures 52. good morning, everybody. it was a potential stanley cup preview on the ice last night in pittsburgh. the sharks and penguins, take a look at our u.s. hockey coach of the olympics, also for the penguins. and they put the game away in the first seven minutes. first goal dupuis, in the second period off the deflection and the fourth goal by kunitz. in the first 7 minutes of the second period sharks' six-game winning streak ended losing to pittsburgh 5-1. thursday night football. the trick play the receiver jordan toddman for the touchdown. jags beat the texans. 27-20. houston lost 11 straight. it florida state quarterback jamesis winston won't face rape charges. attorney's office concluded not enough evidence to go forward. florida state is the top-ranked team in the country. winston is a heavy favorite for the heisman and going to stay that way. brian wilson will remain in dodger blue. the beard signed a one-year deal worth 10 million bucks to stay in southern california. he isn't even going to be the closer.

congressional legislation andy vestment movement started here in the bay area. we are remembering his visit and legacy this morning. >> i don't think anyone will ever forget nelson mandela and he will always be the most loved person. >> reporter: that from one of the 70,000 people who came to the oakland coliseum in 1990 to hear nelson mandela speak, the final stop on his u.s. freedom tour. >> it is you, you the people of oakland the people of the bay area who have given me and my delegation the strength and hope to progress and continue the struggle. >> reporter: andria turner song for him that day in the choir. >> i cried. i -- and so did so many other people. i mean, so many -- you struggle but you never see when the circle comes together. you finally win one. >> reporter: the bay area played a key role in mandela's fight. then congressman ron dellums was the first to introduce anti- apartheid legislation back in

1972 and seven years later the city of berkeley became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. barbara lee worked with mandela on several issues including the campaign to eradicate aids. >> he convinced me that sin simple and bitterness and that ainge -- cynicism and bitterness and that anger were obstacles to progress, and that even with the hostilities and suffering, that we had to come to a place of reconciliation if we were going to move forward. >> reporter: those lucky enough to have met him say they will never forget his presence. larger than life. a giant in so many ways. never to be forgotten. michelle. >> anne, the divestment movement at uc-berkeley made an impact. >> reporter: it really did. there were sit-ins, protests, trying to get the campus to

divest from any corporations that do business with the apartheid government. and eventually, the entire board of regents voted to do so in 1986. so it was a movement that started small and grew large. >> just amazing. anne makovec live in the newsroom, thank you. people having paying respects to mr. mandela at his home in johannesburg with a memorial. >> cbs correspondent alfonso van marsh joins us. this is a big loss for people around the world. >> reporter: that's true, frank and michelle. you can add to that list of people the current president jay come zuma who went to the johannesburg home of nelson mandela to pay his condolences. last night he broke the news to a nation. south africans broke down in tears as they visited a memorial growing outside nelson mandela's home in johannesburg.

[ singing ] >> reporter: which started in the middle of the night when it was announced the man they called madiba had died. >> obviously, i'm very shocked and saddened and really hurtful. >> reporter: people are paying tribute to the former president. >> i think he was a great man and will be remembered. >> reporter: here in south africa news of his death is splashed across the headlines of almost every paper including this one talking about the loss of the father of the nation and this newspaper in zulu saying, go well, madiba. >> we have lost our father. >> reporter: desmond tutu held a prayer service for him in a cape town church this morning. the two men were friends and both won nobel peace prizes for their work as leaders. >> god, thank you for the gift of madiba. >> reporter: his body was taken from his home in johannesburg

and brought to a military hospital in pretoria where it will stay as south africa prepares for a series of public farewells. now, we understand that nelson mandela's body will lay in state until the funeral which we understand has been announced will take place on december 15. >> thank you. of course, it's freezing friday morning. we have been under the cold spell for the last three straight mornings. every one of those mornings we have sent kiet do outside and now he is in san jose where the temperatures are a frosty 20 something. good morning, kiet. happy friday. how are you doing? >> reporter: happy friday indeed. and hopefully, the last cold weather live report that we'll be doing in quite some time here. but yeah, it's hovering right around freezing. we are in the cambrian park neighborhood of san jose. not a whole lot of frost but still cold nonetheless. yesterday we were scraping it off with our fingernails and look at this, you gently just

go right over it. good news if you are waking up this morning driving to work your car is parked outside it should be pretty easy-going this morning for some businesses, though, this cold weather is profiteddable. >> the temperature is dropping and that means cold, hard cash. in walnut creek, sweaters on the shelf since black friday have been selling. >> over the last two weeks our sales have jumped over 500% on sweaters and jackets. the cold wind, like, whoa, now it's time to layer up. >> reporter: at the shop next door hot chocolate sales are up 60% and ice cream sales are still up. all righty. so this is ice cream i left here at 4:00 this morning. it's still just kind of melted and mushy right now. so i'm going to drink this otter pop instead of eating it. [ pause ] >> reporter: it's cold but could be a lot worse.

lawrence? >> yeah. i used to like to drink those otter pops too. i waited until they melted. they were great. >> reporter: i'm going to get my sugar high. >> we have some cold temperatures outside again if you are heading out the door. freezing and freeze warnings up again. mostly clear skies. but just beginning to see a hint of a cloud moving across the sky. we'll see more later on. still, the temperatures very chilly in spots, down to 23 in santa rosa, 28 in concord. 39 san francisco, 30 livermore. 34 san jose. freeze warnings in the bay area. temperatures chilly in the 40s and 50s but chance of showers developing later this afternoon. one viewer barbecuing to keep warm in redwood city, the temperatures there 35 degrees but when it's cold like this

you do whatever you can, stay close to the barbecue. >> he has the same hat as kiet do. i like it. must be cold outside. all right. let's go to traffic. towards the bay bridge, metering lights were turned on late at 6:24 this morning. and so people are taking time off getting last vacation days before the end of the year. it's unusual for 6:38. very light. metering lights are on. this benicia power outage still out to 3700 customers waking up in the dark. some of the streets impacted, cambridge, southampton, you see them there on the screen, west tenth, sutter, york, london. so heads up. no estimated time when the power will be switched back on. here's a live look outside westbound 580 stacking up as you approach north flynn towards vasco and that drive time grows as well up to 25 minutes again lighter than usual for this time of the morning. that is your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. an amber alert is in effect

right now for a 14-year-old girl from washington state. here's a picture of elizabeth romero. the teenager disappeared wednesday afternoon. police believe 19-year-old eduardo flores rosales abducted her. he was last seen driving a 2000 green ford escape with temporary washington state registration. chp believes they may pass through the bay area on their way to mexico. 6:39 now. months after vandals broke out windows in a downtown oakland building one building remains boarded up. many are calling it a big eyesore. these windows tremendous sears store at telegraph and 12th. it's boarded up for five months. they were damaged in rioting. neighbors and business owners say leaving the windows broken is a bad way to do business. >> like they could care less about the city of oakland. we just want you to come and spender money but we don't really care. >> there was something in the windows more people would come

department. some good news unemployment down to a five-year low. here now to chat kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks. >> reporter: good morning. hopefully we'll book some nice gains for the stock market today. it's been a rough week. but the labor department's jobs report for november came in better than expected. a gain of 203,000 jobs lowering the unemployment rate from 7.3 to 7%. that is a five-year low. and a good sign thrashed to the unemployment rate -- in regards to the unemployment rate the labor participation rate increased. in prior drops in the unemployment rate we have seen fewer people looking for work. this is a good sign. it comes after october's gain of 200,000 jobs and shows there is further strength building in the labor market. that's good news overall for the economy. could push the fed towards tapering its bond issues sooner than some people may like but this is good news all the way around. let's look at the market. it is reacting in a positive

fashion today. the dow is up 127 points. nasdaq is gaining 27. s&p up by 14. brooks, we thank you. have a great weekend. he practiced. >> i wrote it down. 6:45. let's check the roads. >> reporter: in a quick note we have police activity in san jose around almaden and san carlos. streets are blocked in the area. we are trying to figure out what's going on. heads up if you are traveling in the area. let's go outside. here's a live look over at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights were turned on later than typical. so a lot of folks may be taking today off. you will notice if you look closely some flashing lights around the middle of the screen, there is a multicar accident. it sounds like a smaller fender- bender minor injuries. but it is in agore point. traffic is so light no major delays only backed up to the end of the parking lot in the busiest lanes. if you want to consider using mass transit, i know lawrence said earlier it may be kind of a wet evening commute. bart systemwide on time.

francisco five-year-old miles scott saved the city from evil villains last month. that was his dream as he battled and beat cancer. miles will be back tomorrow to help the make a wish foundation leading a 5k walk/run that starts at the aquatic park. the world mourns the loss of nelson mandela. the former south african president died at the age of 95. deborah reports from johannesburg. reporter: south africans woke up to the news that nelson mandela was dead. the announcement was made around midnight south african time. many were unaware. people have been flocking to his home in black and white fitting for a man whose legacy was defined by reconciliation, by reaching out a hand to the white minority in south africa and embracing them as part of south africa's fledgling democracy when he was released after 27 years in jail. nelson mandela's body has been taken to one military in
